Tamamori

Born in Aizu. 20 years old.
A stingy and subservient bookworm.
He is so vain that he wears a pair of fake glasses,
and is very good at making himself look serious and clever.
He followed his childhood friends, Minakami and Kawase, to the capital, but was kicked out of his lodgings without much accomplishment.
He now works as a live-in employee at Umebachi-dou, an old book store in Jimbocho 1-chome.
While he is trying to pass the entrance exam for the Imperial University, he is hooked on fantasy novels, movies and is even writing his own novel.
According to Kawase, he is a genius who writes series of bad novels at quick succession.
Perhaps because he is a writer, he has a habit of suddenly indulging in his own world.

Minakami

cv:Tomoyo Kanzaki

Born in Aizu.
The eldest son of a sake brewing family.
He is currently living with a benefactor in Koishikawa
2-chome while he attends the Faculty of Literature at the Imperial University. He is 21 years old.
He has a calm personality and is a sensible person who does not like to fight.
On the other hand, he has a few lapses in his character, such as losing his school cap and wallet.
He is a pathological bibliophile who cannot take his eyes off his novels and forgets to eat or sleep. He always carries a book around with him.
He has read all the old books at the Umebachi-dou, where Tamamori lives.
He has made Tamamori's silly novels his reason for living but commits suicide after promising a movie with Tamamori.

Kawase

Born in Aizu.
Tamamori and Minakami are childhood friends
from the same hometown.
He is so good-looking that some people chase after him,
but his sarcasm is his flaw.
He is 20 years old and lives alone in a western-style mansion in Hongo 3-chome, while attending the Imperial University in the Faculty of Medicine.
He spends most of his time making fun of Tamamori, and spends most of his free time in the Umebachi-dou.
He has no interest in art or antiques, and dislikes Jimbocho as a dusty town. He is a germophobe.
Tamamori and Minakami think that he is not a bad guy, although he has a difficult personality.
He has his personality flaws but Tamamori and Minakami think he is not a bad person...... Amused by Minakami's suicide, he has many deep and dark things within him.

“It’s become this bad because there are people as filthy as you.”

Hanazawa

cv:Yu Okada

Born in Aizu. Son of a doctor.
He is 23 years old. He is blunt but passionate
about justice; a true-blue typical Japanese man.
After graduating from junior high school, he left Fukushima and went to the Military Academy. He is now a second lieutenant in the army.
He used to get on well with Tamamori and his friends, but gradually became distant from them, and for the next eight years they were estranged.
Recently, he has been seen frequently in Hongo and Jimbocho, where the Imperial University is located.
He always has a frown on his face, but he would mile only at Tamamori, whom he loved like a younger brother. Now, he is no longer that same as before.
He was originally an artillery officer, but his love of fantasy led him to the Army Science Research Institute.
He seems to have a good friend who is an Army Technical Captain.

“I’ll come... and I’ll slice that hallucination to to pieces.”

Professor Hikawa

At dusk, a man with an eye patch wanders
into the Umebachi-dou. His real name is Kijuro Hikawa.
He speaks in a polite, respectful tone,
but he is always anxious, frightened and suspicious.
He is conscious about putting up a smile, but his smile seems quite forced.
He seems to have been a regular since Tamamori started working at Umebachi-dou, but his background is unknown.
It is unknown what he is researching on, but he asks to be addressed as "Professor".
He is a collector of tin toys. The source of this information is unknown, but he is a fanatical fan of Tamamori. He gave Tamamori a tin goldfish watering can, as a token of friendship, which creeps out the latter.

“Ah! S-Sorry, giving you something like this out of the blue... That’s creepy, isn’t it? I’m sorry.”

Man in the Noh Mask

cv:Hideyoshi Bitou

A mysterious large man who lives in
the basement of Umebachi-dou.
He wears a Noh mask and speaks with a slightly stammering tone.
When he finds Tamamori, he chases after him for some reason, but he doesn't seem to have any hostile intentions.
However, to Tamamori, his very existence is a threat.
He is violent towards everyone except Tamamori, and will beat Kawase and Hanazawa to death without a question.
His purpose is a mystery.
The motivation is also a mystery.
Tamamori suspects that he is involved in Minakami's suicide, but everything is still a mystery.
Judging by his voice, he is in his late teens. Even so, he has a character route.

Sub Character

Shopkeeper

cv:

The owner of an old book store, Umebachi-dou.
He is a generous owner who lets Tamamori live
upstairs for free after the latter was evicted from his lodgings.
Due to his chronic illness, he asks Tamamori to look after the shop.
The shop has a strange policy to only open on rainy days.
It is not known if he is making ends meet, but he does not seem to be troubled by putting food on the table.
He always stays in the back of the room and Tamamori has only spoken to him through the paper screen.
Judging by his voice, he seems to be in his fifties.
Whenever Tamamori is in doubt, he gently chides him.

“If you’re ever in trouble, you can come back anytime.”

Haruhiko-san

“You’re alone.”


He is a character in "The Rainy Season
of the Giant Toad" written by Tamamori.
He seems to be just a hallucination,
but he could act on his own will, drinking tea and playing Go.
Initially, he is treated with disdain, but eventually becomes Tamamori's emotional support......?

Frog Man

Meiko

A waitress at the café where Tamamori
and Kawase hang out.
She seems to have a steady crush on Kawase,
apparent from serving him extra coffee.
For some reason, she knows a lot about Tamamori's background and calls him "Mr. Writer" in a sarcastic manner.
She is the type of person who shows a different personality in front of the person she likes.
The mole on the corner of her eye resembles someone ......?

Madam

She is the widow of the Oizumi
family that Minakami lives with.
She is the one who kicked Tamamori out and
is still feared by Tamamori to this day.

so they avoid each other in their daily lives.

A group of delinquents hiding in the old book store Sanzendou.
They play detective with Kudou.
For some reason, they are currently sniffing around Kawase, a student at Imperial University.
Also for some unknown reason, they are familiar with Tamamori's background.

“Ikeda-san... was killed by that teidaisei-san!”

“Kudou, you’re so cool.”

Sazan and Hitotsurugi

Twin maidservants working for Hikawa.
They were sent into service at the age of 14 and are now 74 years old.
Thanks to plastic surgery from Hikawa, they retain their youthful appearance.
The younger sister, Sazan, is an airhead and can't even remember Tamamori's name properly...
But she is very fond of Tamamori for getting along well (?) with Hikawa.
The elder sister, Hitotsurugi, has a serious demeanor and thinks that Tamamori is deceiving Hikawa.
She is trying to judge whether Tamamori is a suitable friend for Hikawa.

“That the number of young master’s friends are increasing. Hee-hee.”

“Thank you for always looking after Kijuurou-sama.”

YUMENO KYUSAKU

An eccentric writer who suddenly appeared in 1915.
He has a huge following among some bibliophiles, and Mizukami has named him as his favorite author.
Tamamori was also a fan of his work at first, but Mizukami seems to be uncomfortable with him because he seems to enjoy talking about things (other than himself) too much.
In this year (1922), he published a strange book, "Dogura Magura".
